Protecting Sebangau: A Vital Refuge for Orangutans

Sebangau National Park in Borneo is one of the last remaining strongholds for the Critically Endangered Bornean orangutan.

Its vast lowland rainforest is home to the largest protected population of these incredible apes. However, the forest faces significant challenges due to past logging and peatland drainage.

In the past, illegal loggers dug canals to transport timber, which caused the peatlands to dry out. This has left the area vulnerable to degradation and dangerous forest fires, which can devastate the entire ecosystem.

Thankfully, our partner, Borneo Nature Foundation (BNF), is tackling these threats head-on in the critical Sebangau region. Their efforts include:

🌱  Restoring damaged peatlands by blocking canals and replanting forests.
🌱 Working with local communities to raise awareness and encourage behaviours that prevent fires.
🌱 Strengthening fire-fighting capacity and building networks to prevent and respond to fires more effectively.

In addition to these vital conservation efforts, BNF conducts groundbreaking research to protect this precious ecosystem. Long-term monitoring helps track changes in orangutan populations, habitat conditions, and biodiversity. It also helps evaluate the success of conservation actions, like peatland restoration and reforestation, and develop new strategies for protecting the forest.

Exciting News!

Starting early this year, BNF will launch a three-year orangutan health monitoring program! This innovative project will study the health and behaviour of orangutans and examine how environmental changes impact them. One key focus will be tracking gastrointestinal parasites—a crucial but often overlooked aspect of their health.

Thank you

Thanks to your incredible support, we’ve been able to fund BNF’s vital research since 2018. Together, we’re ensuring a brighter future for the Sebangau ecosystem, its wildlife, and the communities that depend on it.

We’re so grateful for your dedication to protecting orangutans and their rainforest home. Your generosity makes all of this possible. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this important work!
