Four remarkable orangutans have taken their first steps towards a life of freedom in the Bukit Tigapuluh (BTP) Ecosystem in Sumatra, all thanks to your invaluable support! Our partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the Frankfurt Zoological Society has been instrumental in achieving this milestone, and together, we are making significant strides in securing a sustainable population of Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutans in their natural habitat.
Each of these orangutans has a unique story, and their journey to freedom has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Marike - A Brave Survivor
Marike, a five-year-old male, endured a challenging start to life after being orphaned at a young age. But his strength and resilience shone through during his time at the Open Orangutan Sanctuary (OOS). Having spent nearly two years in our care since arriving in May 2021, Marike showed remarkable progress in acquiring essential forest survival skills at Jungle School. Today, we proudly watch as he ventures into the wild, where he belongs.
Feng and Ipin - The Dynamic Duo
Feng and Ipin, both seven-year-old males, arrived at the Open Orangutan Sanctuary (OOS) around 15 months ago. During their time here, the inseparable duo formed an unbreakable bond, embarking on their rehabilitation journey together. Their teamwork and determination paid off as they mastered vital skills like foraging, climbing, and nest building, preparing them for their return to the wild at the Sumatran Orangutan Reintroduction Centre (SORC).
Duma - A Ray of Hope
Duma, a five-year-old female, joined the Open Orangutan Sanctuary (OOS) less than eight months ago, bringing with her a sense of hope and renewal. Despite the challenges she faced, Duma quickly adapted to her new environment and embraced the training at Jungle School. Her release into the SORC marks the beginning of an exciting chapter in her life as she explores the vast wilderness of Sumatra.
The release of these four orangutans marks a significant achievement in our ongoing mission to give these magnificent creatures a chance to thrive freely in their natural environment. We are committed to monitoring their progress closely to ensure they adapt well to their newfound freedom. They are also protected by our dedicated Wildlife Protection Units, which your support has helped to fund.
