Bulan is now 13 years of age and she continues to go well at Nyaru Menteng. She is in excellent health and spends much of her day climbing and swinging around inside the cage.
Bulan is considered to be an active and skillful orangutan. She will use twigs to scratch her back and will also use it to gain the attention of a passing technician by waving it around or poking other orangutans with it.
She is still very close friends with Nanga, who is in the same enclosure as Bulan. They will play together, swing, hang and climb around the enclosure. They also play wrestle together. Bulan’s favourite foods are sweet, soft fruits such as pawpaw, banana and watermelon.
Technicians give the orangutans’ branches and leaves before dusk so they can make night nests. Bulan will usually stack the leaves inside her tyre swing and she saves some to cover her head. She will also break off a small twig to swat away mosquitoes.
